An Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD) is an IATA standard electronic document used to record, process, and track payments for products and services that are not covered by an airline ticket. Common uses include checked baggage, seat selection, lounge access, onboard services, change fees, and other ancillary products.
There are two types of EMDs:
- EMD-A (Associated): Linked to a specific flight or ticket coupon and typically used for flight-related ancillary services.
- EMD-S (Standalone): Issued independently of a flight coupon for services such as lounge access, service fees, or other standalone purchases.
EMDs remain a core component of many airline reservation and distribution systems, particularly in environments built around traditional e-ticketing. As the industry adopts modern retailing standards such as IATA ONE Order, many airlines are moving toward unified order management, where flights, ancillary products, and related services are managed within a single customer order rather than through separate tickets and EMDs.
